When Covid forced us into lockdown and isolation, I decided to make that time useful. I bought stretchers and canvas from the art shop, imagining long quiet days of painting. Instead, my partner’s business tripled almost overnight. I stepped in to help and simply never stepped back out.

The business grew, opportunities followed, and before we knew it we were renovating a house and filming the process, which became a successful YouTube series. Then we built a granny flat and filmed that too. For creative people, there is rarely a dull moment.

The canvases I bought during lockdown stayed untouched, pushed aside by more urgent priorities. Not without some resentment, my artistic energy was redirected elsewhere. Only now, as I return to painting, do I fully understand how deeply I missed it.

Glitter & Grit is a group exhibition conceived with the Mardi Gras celebrations in mind. A time to come together, to celebrate, dance, party and freely express oneself. For this exhibition, I painted a series of three canvases inspired by the energy of a street party. Stepping away from my usually quiet compositions, these works hint at open-air music, movement and fleeting encounters. Temporary connections formed with strangers, a flirt, a glance, and perhaps the beginning of something more lasting.

2026 marks almost seven years since I last held a brush. It is the year I finally return to what I love most: telling stories through bodies, colour, volume and form. My silent figures are back. Intense and moody, quiet yet expressive, clothed or unclothed, they speak without words.

"It Takes All Colours To Make A Rainbow" is a collection of 5 sculptures all from the same mould and all with small marks and differences. This series speaks of the quiet truth that difference is not division. Each figure stands on its own, yet remains an essential part of a larger narrative.

After this exhibition, these sculptures will likely find each a home of their own, each representing just one colour from the wider composition. And yet they belong to a greater story, like us, each a unique being, different yet equally precious, each a vital contribution to the whole.

I am excited to present eleven small new works at Basement Gallery in Gosford as part of the Glitter & Grit group exhibition. I'm excited, and a little tense, as I am before every show.
